Basketball Camp

Perhaps doing a basketball camp never occurred to Paul when he wrote that he wanted to become all things to all men so that he could win some to Christ. But at the beginning of the twenty-first century, when the NBA is as popular in Europe as it is in America, the idea of using basketball to spread the Good News emerges naturally.

The Evangelistic Basketball Camps have proven to be a successful way of introducing more men women to Christ in Central & Eastern Europe. The camps are fairly unique in that they combine friendship evangelism with a week-long basketball camp.

Coach’s Qualifications
Basketball Camp staff should have a vibrant, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and the ability to communicate the Gospel in a small group setting. They also need to be able to lead drills and coach a team of 10-12 guys or gals. They need not be in peak physical form, but should be able to play a fairly aggressive game of hoops. Of course they don’t need to know the language of the country where the camp is located - when needed, translation is provided.

Why Go?
•God will reward your joining Him to do His work in the hearts of people.
•You will find a great deal of satisfaction in making an eternal difference in young men’s & women’s lives.
•You will gain first-hand insights into the culture of that country that you would not have gained otherwise.
•You will make new friendships and gain an understanding of the realities of missionary work.

The Clinic is for 2-1/2 hours for five to six afternoons, with a different basketball skill emphasized each day. The daily clinic schedule includes large group instruction and demonstration, a half-hour translated small group Bible study time, team drills, scrimmages, and inter-team shooting and rebounding contests. Each coach works with the same team of students every night. On the last day, the teams play in a double elimination tournament to determine the camp champions.

Fun Challenges... During the day, the coaches may be asked to speak in public schools or provide English conversation practice for adults in the city. Sometimes the IM coaches have been asked to play a team of coaches from the area in a media-publicized match. Naturally, these are all great witnessing opportunities.

The Banquet is on the last evening of the clinic and all the players and coaches attend this awards banquet. This is a time for each coach to present his team awards and have a time of fellowship with his/her team in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Also, another clear presentation of the Gospel is given during this time through music and the spoken word.

Debriefing... On the last afternoon, the coaches evaluate what God has done in and through them alongside IM’s career missionary staff. This time is valuable for encouragement of our staff and the team’s reentry for their ministries back in the States.

Follow-Up... Local missionaries and cooperating national staff members help not just in organizing the camp, but also play a vital role in building relationships with the students during the camp. Through these relationships, there are opportunities for follow-up Bible studies and further evangelism and discipleship with the players. We ask our coaches to carry on the friendships they established with players once they return home. They are encouraged to pray for them and to make a commitment to correspond with their team after returning to the States. The camps are held annually, so there is the possibility of following through with the relationships by returning for another camp in the same area.

Resident Camps combine the basketball clinic with an English Camp. The coaches and players stay in the same facility and spend more hours getting to know each other. During the camp, students are given four hours of clinical basketball training in two 2-hour sessions. They also have three hours of English lessons, 1-1/2 hours of English Bible study, and 1-1/2 hours of conversational English. Each evening different activities are held to build relationships. The camp also works for couples as one can focus on teaching basketball skills and the other on leading the English classes.

The cost of the trip is $please call plus your airline ticket. The ministry trip is preceded by a one-day training and planning program. This is either held directly before the trip, or can be scheduled ahead of time for a church-based team. The camp begins a day after arrival with a three-hour talent evaluation and introduction to the coaching staff. Players are then drafted by the coaches to make up their teams for the week. On the last evening, the team hosts a banquet and awards ceremony, which completes the clinic. The team may assist in the local church service on a Sunday afternoon. The last afternoon is spent in the debriefing session.

Ski Camp

The ski camp is held in Romania and will consist of 30-40 believers and 30-40 unbelievers, ages 18-30. These will be university students or graduates, guys and gals, who come to learn fundamentals of skiing from American instructors. During the camp, the instructors live with the students for these seven days and have an abundance of opportunities to love them and share the Gospel with them. Relationships develop quickly in this environment so even those students who come as atheists leave with a listening heart to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The unity in Christ displayed by the American team and the Romanian believers provides an accelerator for the acceptance of the Gospel. Students are drawn to Christ by being recipients of a supernatural love they have not seen anywhere before. Many Romanian students who do not know the Lord are more willing to converse about faith and open their hearts to an American. The daily clinic schedule includes small group instruction and demonstration, a ski contest at the end of camp, and evening discussion sessions revealing a Christian perspective on topics of great interest for the students.

Some of the goals that the ski camp can accomplish are:

  1. Demonstrate Christian life and love in a group context (individual & group testimony)
  2. To continue the relationships with the non-Christians from English camps and those attending the English lessons to build new relationships.
  3. To motivate the Christians to practice relationship-based evangelism in a relaxed way.
  4. To create opportunities for discussions about Christianity - formal in the scheduled evening meetings and also informal.
  5. Help the students to improve their English language skills through informal conversation with the American teachers.

Why skiing?
Skiing is the most popular winter sport among students and they practice it after the winter exam session. Some students come to camp who know how to ski already, but there are many who have never had contact with skiing but want to learn. With the contribution of the American
teachers, the Romanian students have the opportunity to take skiing lessons which would otherwise be very expensive for them.

Bicycle Camp

International Messengers invites you to be a part of our bike camp. This is an opportunity where you can enjoy cycling and see the splendor of God’s creation. We are so excited to see God working in amazing ways in the lives of the short-term missionaries and the other bikers who have been involved in this ministry.

Why biking? The atmosphere is a natural classroom for daily application of Christian principles taught during the devotional times and Bible studies. It necessitates the development of character and interactive skills especially needed to overcome stressful situations. Biking creates an environment for participants to develop strength of character, relationships with each other, and most importantly, a relationship with God. Being surrounded in the beauty of God's handiwork while pedaling through the countryside of Poland gives each person opportunity to experience the wonders created by our awesome God. Biking adds a sense of adventure and accomplishment. All riders have a common goal - to finish the ride. There is a comradery that develops through the unified effort of finishing each day’s ride as well as joy and excitement when all reach the final destination point.

The bike camp begins with a group of bikers with a support group and vehicles. Safety precautions are taken such as walkie-talkies with leaders, daily maps for the bikers, technical support, cellular phones and first aid kits. Starting the day with morning devotions helps encourage the group and offers something to think about during the day of pedaling. Each day is a new journey through the beautiful countryside and villages giving bikers the opportunity to view “life” in Poland. The distance we ride in one day is about 50-60 miles. Many people think they can not make that distance but the way we ride during the camp, many people can make it! It is a well-paced ride with some going a little faster in the front and others a little slower in the back. The front group stops often so that we basically ride together. It is a group effort and we really strive to keep a close atmosphere. There is generally a great diversity among the group but as the camp progresses there is a great feeling of togetherness as the group works toward a common goal. There is opportunity for great conversations and relationship-building. Evening activities include singing and a Bible study. There is always time for questions, answers and discussion. This time can be a great inspiration for all.

Our desire is that God would give us individuals with an available, servant spirit who love Jesus and desire to serve Him faithfully. You need not be in peak physical form but should be able to bike 50-60 miles per day. The camps will provide solid “relationshipbased” ministry and personal spiritual growth.

The cost for the bike camp is $please call plus airline tickets and a bike (either your own or money to purchase a bike in Poland). God made a beautiful landscape on earth called Poland. Come see for yourself and discover how awesome His creation is in this part of the world! Please call us at 1-800-243-6763 for an application, information on dates and locations, or if you have further questions.

Softball Camp

Our Softball/English Day Camp is held in Hungary in August. During this camp, the North American team teaches English in the morning and afternoon and play and teach softball to teens. This camp provides contacts for our staff in Ujfeherto, Hungary.

We are able to create an atmosphere in the camp to develop relationships, break down barriers and share the Gospel.
